Zambia is a land of wilderness safaris, countless wetlands, abundant wildlife, and the largest waterfall in the world. This friendly country offers rare gems for the visitor who takes time to explore its national parks and landscapes. With its warm-hearted locals, pristine land, and numerous opportunities for adventure, Zambia combines African culture and raw, unforgettable beauty.

Why Volunteer in Zambia?
Like many countries in Africa, Zambia’s economy has been crippled by national debt, a tumultuous political history, and an HIV epidemic that has infected more than 20 percent of the adult population. This combination of problems has left many Zambian children orphaned and has also placed an enormous burden on underfunded clinics and schools. With an excess of free time and lack of attention, many children simply wander the streets to pass their days. Because of poor health care funding, many Zambian citizens are not getting the medical attention they need.

Our partner organization is dedicated to assisting Zambia’s people. They place volunteers in local clinics to help the overworked medical staff, and at an orphanage to provide companionship to the children. Volunteers assist teachers in local schools, coach sports, and help build classrooms so students have more places to learn. Through their efforts in Zambia, our volunteers provide a valuable presence for the locals, as well as an opportunity to make an impact on African lives.

Project Location: Livingstone
Mosi-oa-tunya: The Smoke that Thunders. This is how the locals refer to the magnificent spray from Victoria Falls. Against this backdrop lies Livingstone, located just outside the Victoria Falls area in southern Zambia. Livingstone has been described as Zambia’s tourist mecca and the “adventure capital of Africa,” a place with a colonial character and easygoing African charm. This gateway to adventure offers safaris and game viewing in pristine national parks, as well as bungee jumping, helicopter rides, whitewater rafting and more.

Despite the tourist boom, Livingstone suffers along with the rest of Zambia from underfunded schools and clinics and a population decimated by HIV infection. Fortunately, with the help of volunteers around the world, our partner organization is gradually improving the lives of Livingstone’s people.
