In
the last several decades, South Africa has become a premier
travel destination. Home to 44 million people and 11 official
languages, the “Rainbow Nation” is one of
the great cultural meeting points on the African continent.
The birthplace of Nelson Mandela boasts a fascinating
history and a burgeoning economy, as well as abundant
wildlife, beautiful beaches, and year-round sunshine.
The country is particularly known for its “Big Five”
wildlife populations—elephant, lion, rhino, leopard
and buffalo—and its 20 national parks.
Whether visitors explore the Cape Town metropolis, scuba
dive off the coast of northern KwaZulu-Natal, or enjoy
a safari in Kruger National Park, South Africa provides
visitors an abundance of beauty, ethnic diversity and
adventure.
Why volunteer in South Africa?
Though apartheid may be dead, its heritage has left a
visible mark on South Africa. Nowhere is this more evident
than in the cities, where Africans (non-whites) live in
rambling townships and struggle with poverty, lack of
education, and disease. The country has the second-highest
number of HIV/AIDS patients in the world, with nearly
one in seven infected. And people aren’t the only
ones affected—South Africa’s apartheid-era
regulations, settlement patterns, tourism and industrialization
have also taken a toll on the environment, resulting in
marine and air pollution, deforestation, and an overall
loss of biodiversity.
Our partner organizations are dedicated to addressing
the needs of the people and the environment of South Africa.
Volunteers can work with street communities, underprivileged
youth, and disadvantaged women, helping feed them, empower
them, and give them a brighter future. Volunteers in South
Africa can also choose to work with environmental conservation
and wildlife rescue projects, striving to preserve the
country’s natural treasures for future generations.

Table Mountain, Cape Town is South Africa’s most
stunning and romantic city, and rated as one of the top

one famous for its colony of African penguins—or
enjoy breathtaking wind-swept views from the top of Table
Mountain. In addition to the rich natural diversity, Cape
Town also offers a unique cultural heritage, one that
has shaped its politics and social landscape for the past
four hundred years. |

Location: Port Elizabeth
Port Elizabeth, 25 miles away from
the site of our Lion Reintroduction Project, is one of
South Africa’s best-kept secrets. Temperatures are
moderate year-round and water sports–surfing, boardsailing
and diving–are always in season. The city is set
along the beautiful shores of Algoa Bay and is surrounded
by scenic nature trails, wildlife and long golden beaches.
Port Elizabeth and its beaches are noted for being the
cleanest in South Africa. The entire region is malaria-free. |
