You will be volunteering in a 3,000-acre game reserve in Zimbabwe, about 6 miles from the city of Gweru. Gweru is known mainly as a stopover for tourists who are traveling towards the other incredible safari and jungle tour options nearby. The game reserve has modern facilities and provides lodging and sightseeing for tourists to the area.

The African outback has always provided visitors with the opportunity to see extraordinary wildlife. Unfortunately, negative environmental trends have harmed a number of animal species, including the African lion. Unmonitored hunting, poaching, habitat destruction, and diseases have destroyed the chances of these creatures to naturally maintain their own species.

The staff and owners of our partner game reserve believe in sustainable tourism. This means that almost everything they provide at their camp will also benefit the community and environment that they work in. With this in mind, they created this 3,000-acre wildlife preserve, with the primary objective of controlled reintroduction of lions into the wild. They hope to expand the dwindling number of African lions in the wilderness through breeding and observation projects.

Volunteers on this project will be assisting the staff in the rearing of lion cubs, which will then be released into the wild. You will also be helping with animal observation projects and basic park maintenance. As a volunteer in Zimbabwe, you will be directly involved in helping sustain the environment for the future generations of animals and plant life in Africa.

Orientation:
Upon arrival to the game reserve in Gweru, volunteers will receive three days of orientation. During this time, they will be introduced to all the staff and familiarized with the reserve and its boundaries. You will also be informed of all safety precautions taken while working with the lions and other animals on the reserve. At this time, volunteers will receive in-depth information about their specific projects and project tools.

Transportation:

Volunteer Adventures will provide transportation for the following:

Airport pickup in Bulawayo Airport
Transportation to project site in Gweru
Local transportation at project locations

Accommodations:
Volunteers at the game reserve will be staying in comfortable and spacious rooms that have thatched roofs and are shaded by indigenous foliage. Local carpenters have crafted many of the campsite materials, which is another way that the nature reserve assists Zimbabweans in sustainable tourism.

Volunteers will be lodging with one other volunteer in twin-bedded rooms with nearby shower and bathroom facilities. These spacious rooms open up to a main courtyard and swimming pool, which are centrally located in the camp. Volunteers are also invited to use the other camp amenities, including lounging space at the social fire-pit, the open-air dining room, a TV room, outdoor picnic areas, and the tourist shop.

Meals:
Volunteers will have three meals a day at the campsite dining room. A local professional staff caters these meals, and volunteers will have a few different food options per day.

Activities:
During your free time, you will have access to numerous different activities such as:

Canoeing on nearby lakes
Fishing trips
Horseback riding
Swimming
Elephant riding

In-country support:
There is always someone at the nature reserve that can help you. A 24-hour support team will be there to assist and instruct volunteers during their stay. There are also trained field guides at the camp that can help you with any problems or concerns.
