The
Animal Rescue Project is situated on a private game reserve
in Hwange National Park. This park is the largest national
park in Zimbabwe, sharing a border with Botswana's famous
Chobe National Park. Hwange is home to 45,000 elephants
that migrate between both parks, as well as a variety
of other safari wildlife including lions, cheetahs, hyenas,
wildebeest, waterbuck, impala, and numerous species of
wild birds.
Although Zimbabwe has done an excellent job in preserving
land for its wildlife, there are always problems with
illegal hunting. Volunteers on our Animal Rescue Project
will work with a trust that is licensed to rescue and
release illegally snared and injured animals on the game
reserve.
Our
partner organizations are also heavily involved in wildlife
research. Currently, they are working on understanding
life patterns of the predators on the African safari,
including hyenas, lions and cheetahs. Their research depends
heavily on both donations and the help of volunteers.
The work performed by local rangers and volunteers will
directly affect human understanding of wildlife on the
safari, and help preserve it in its natural state.
Orientation:
Upon arrival to the private reserve at Hwange National
Park, you will receive three days of orientation. During
this time, you and the other volunteers will be introduced
to all the staff and familiarized with the reserve and
its boundaries. You will also be informed of all safety
precautions taken while working with the lions and other
animals on the reserve. At this time, you will receive
in-depth information about their specific projects and
project tools.
Transportation:
Volunteer Adventures will provide transportation for the
following: Airport
pickup in Bulawayo Airport Transportation
to project site in Hwange Local
transportation at project locations Accommodations:
As
a volunteer at the game reserve, you will be staying at
the private lodge at the game reserve in comfortable and
spacious rooms. These rooms have thatched roofs and are
shaded by indigenous foliage. There are no fences around
the reserve, and animals roam freely through the camp.
You will also be invited to use the other camp amenities,
including lounging space at the social fire-pit, the open-air
dining room, a TV room, outdoor picnic areas, swimming
pool and the tourist shop. Meals:
You will have three meals a day at the campsite
dining room. A local professional staff caters these meals,
and volunteers will have a few different food options
per day. In-country
support:
There is always someone at the nature reserve to
help you. A 24-hour support team will be there to assist
and instruct volunteers during their stay. There are also
trained field guides at the camp that can help you with
any problems or concerns. |
