Make
a difference in the lives of Cape Town's disadvantaged
communities when you volunteer with our Community Outreach
Program in South Africa.
As a volunteer with the Community Outreach Program,
you will have the opportunity to enhance the lives of
underprivileged children and refugee orphans in Cape
Town. Volunteers can choose to participate in a number
of different community development initiatives, including
one of three daytime programs plus a late afternoon
program. Whether you’re helping children develop
their reading skills at primary school, watching toddlers
at a refugee orphanage or helping older kids with their
homework at a women’s shelter, you’ll contribute
to the brighter future of these underserved youth.
Volunteers on this unique program can choose to work in one of two primary
schools in Cape Town’s disadvantaged communities.
These schools are run on strict budgets by committed
staff and have 40 to 45 students per classroom, making
individual attention a challenge. Many students have
learning disabilities that require remedial programs
and additional one-on-one instruction.
Volunteers in Cape Town are also needed to provide
additional hands-on help at a women’s shelter
and refugee orphanage, where young African children
need homework assistance and daycare. At the shelter,
you will look after the children of women who live there—giving
mothers the time they need to attend classes that will
help them live independently. At the refugee orphanage,
you’ll assist the children with their schoolwork
and play games with them in the afternoons.
No matter which program you choose in Cape Town, your
efforts on the Community Outreach Program will help
provide dignity and friendship to the many children
you encounter.
As a volunteer you can:
Expose
children to development activities such as art
and culture, dance, music, theatre,
sport and educational sessions
Reduce
the number of children on the street during the day
Reduce
crime involving homeless children and street communities
Assist
with feeding children
Take
care of young children and babies at St Anne’s
while their mothers attend vital
life-skills training programs
