You
will be volunteering at an animal refuge in the Omaheke
region of central Namibia. This farmland region is about
200 miles from the country's capital, Windhoek.
Farmers in this area have had to protect their livestock
from wild animals. They sometimes resort to unlicensed
poaching and illegal snares to catch the animals before
they destroy their livestock. Animals killed in this way
often leave behind young offspring that cannot care for
themselves. Animals that don't die are often severely
injured and left to live a disadvantaged life.
The family that owns the Animal Refuge Project believes
that these animals deserve a second chance. They have
created an organization that serves as a haven for abandoned
or injured animals that can no longer care for themselves.
The people who live and work on this farm also educate
visitors and volunteers about these animals in their natural
habitat.
As a volunteer in Namibia, you will be working with project
staff to create a stable environment for the wildlife
at the refuge. Along with caring for baby animals, you
will help perform farm and reserve maintenance. Volunteers
will also have the chance to participate in an exciting
new fencing project. A celebrity donor has recently paid
for materials needed to fence the area surrounding the
animal refuge. Upon construction, this fence will allow
the rehabilitated animals to live and roam in an environment
free from the dangers of hunters and poachers.
Your help in Namibia will benefit disabled animals and
the people who have dedicated their lives to improve the
animals' conditions.
Orientation:
The project leaders will pick you up at Windhoek
Airport. They will then take you to the Animal Refuge
Project. During your first three days as a volunteer,
you will be trained to handle and feed the animals that
you will be working with. You will also be educated on
the animals' lifestyles and habits in order to live with
them peacefully and productively.

Transportation:
Volunteer Adventures will provide transportation for the
following:
Airport
pickup in Windhoek, transportation to project site
Local
transport at project locations
Accommodations:
Volunteers will be staying in a shared room in the volunteer
lodge. Towels and bed linens are provided.

Meals:
Three meals a day are included in this project.
Breakfast and a light lunch will be offered and dinner
will be a large meal or buffet. You are expected to serve
yourself and clear tables.
Activities:
During your time as a volunteer, you will be taking care
of the animals at the refuge. You will also be trained
to assist the local field guides and learn how to guide
farm tours. Project staff will arrange periodic excursions
and activities for you to participate in during your free
time.
In-country support:
There will be a project leader and field guides on site
who can help you utilize your skills as a volunteer. In
addition, there is 24-hour in-country assistance if needed. |
