The Location
A vibrant village along the tropical coastline of Mozambique's Inhambane Province, Vilanculos features pristine coral reefs, miles of unspoiled beach, and more than 300 species of birds. It is a short boat ride to Bazaruto Archipelago—one of Mozambique’s most famous national parks. Vilanculos has seen extensive growth in the last decad, with its favorable climate, crystal blue waters and abundance of water sports.

The Situation

Mozambique acted as a major outlet for Portuguese exports until the country gained its independence in 1975. As a result of hostile neighbors that disapproved of the country’s new government, Mozambique entered into a 15-year civil war. An estimated 1 million people were killed and more than 3 million escaped as refugees. A major drought in the 1990s led to significant starvation and widespread unemployment. Most recently, a category-four cyclone struck the country. Winds in excess of 120 mph displaced thousands of people, destroying their homes and washing away crops.

What You Can Do
As a volunteer you can visit village people who are too sick to leave their homes or can’t afford health care. You will help the people develop their craft skills and teach them to become more creative with natural resources. Through the soccer program, volunteers will help teach the sport to school-aged children. You will help facilitate monthly soccer tournaments, where young athletes can receive prizes. Through your work, you will cultivate relationships and strengthen the community’s self-esteem.

Airport Pickup and Orientation:
You will fly into Vilanculos International Airport—flights arrive daily from Johannesburg. A program coordinator or staff member from our partner organization will meet you and drive you to the program accommodations. The airport is a five-minute drive from the program site. Upon arrival, you will receive a comprehensive orientation session and learn your specific duties as a volunteer.

Transportation:
Volunteer Adventures will arrange for the following transportation:
Airport pickup and drop-off
Local transportation to and from the program site

Accommodations:
You will be staying in rustic but comfortable thatched bungalows, located about 100 meters from the beach. There are three bungalows that are split into two rooms each. Every room has two single beds. You will have access to two bathrooms with a toilet and shower with hot running water. There is a communal dining area for the staff and volunteers, along with an outdoor pool and volleyball.

In-Country Support:
We work directly with our partner organization to provide support during your time in Mozambique. You can expect help from program coordinators, field guides, fellow volunteers and the staff of both Volunteer Adventures and our partner organization. We also provide a 24-hour cell phone number for emergencies.

Additional Activities and Excursions:
Vilanculos is famous for its scuba diving and snorkeling. Some activities offered for an additional fee include deep sea fishing excursions, an open water five-day PADI certified scuba diving course a Dhow Safari and Dhow cruise, horseback rides on the beach, snorkeling excursions, and dining at various beachfront restaurants.
