Immerse
yourself in the Mexican media when you volunteer with
our Journalism Program at Oaxaca’s oldest and most
respected newspaper.
Volunteers with our Journalism Internship will shadow
Mexican journalists at El Imparcial, one of southern Mexico’s
most important newspapers. This program allows volunteers
interested in journalism to shadow reporters and photographers
out on assignment and in the newsroom. If your Spanish
skills are well-developed, volunteers may have the opportunity
to take photographs and write articles for publication.
A new era of Mexican journalism emerged in the mid 1990s
as political parties in Mexico challenged, and eventually
defeated, the Institutional Revolutionary Party’s
(PRI) 60-year long domination of Mexican politics. Democracy
flourished and citizens became increasingly involved,
forming numerous human rights groups and breaking away
from traditional ideologies. Mexico’s authoritarian
media began transforming into a civic-oriented press that
continues to play a role in the country’s democratization.
As a volunteer you will observe these journalistic trends
firsthand, and gain an intimate understanding of how Mexican
newspapers operate. You will work alongside writers, editors
and photographers in the newsroom and out in the field.
You will also get a taste of how reporting in Oaxaca differs
from journalism in other parts of the world.
