Help save Africa’s lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas when you volunteer with our Wild Predator Project in Kenya.

In this African conservation project, volunteers will work closely with a resident research team and local Maasai tribesmen to monitor, track and research one of Kenya’s most threatened lion populations, as well as other predators such as cheetahs, leopards and hyenas.

Over the past 30 years, Africa’s wild predator populations have plummeted dangerously, mostly due to conflict with humans. In 1975, an estimated 200,000 lions roamed the continent. Now experts believe there are as few as 23,000. Numerous conservationists have turned their attention toward this crisis, particularly in the southeastern region of Kenya.

As a volunteer with this project, you will be traveling through the area surrounding Tsavo West National Park, monitoring lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena and other wildlife movement, observing animal behavior, and analyzing the resulting data. You will also work directly with the Maasai community, helping build nursery schools and medical clinics, assisting teachers in classrooms, and organizing extracurricular activities and wildlife conservation workshops for local children.

As a volunteer you will:

Monitor lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena and other wildlife     movement and behavior
Track and record the number and location of predators and     other wildlife species
Assist with data collection, taking photos and creating animal     profiles
Analyze predator diet by observing kills and examining scat
Interview local Maasai regarding lion activities in their area
Build much-needed nursery schools and medical clinics in the local Maasai community, as well as assist in classrooms, and organize extracurricular sports and wildlife conservation workshops for local children

  Tony Manning, UK
"I participated in the two-week lion project and the two-week elephant project. The best part of both projects was the thrill of discovery. You never knew what you were going to see next or when you would see something else. It was this sense of mystery that would keep you going, even after your 100th elephant or your 50th impala. As a group, we were rewarded with some amazing sights, from rare animals to a female cheetah with her two young cubs. Then at the end of the day, there was always the chance to look at your digital photos and relive the excitement of the day."
