You
will be working at a Wild Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation
Center situated in northern Guatemala on a 45-hectare
tract of land near Lake Petén Itza. This center
was originally created for the specific needs of rescuing
animals that have been stolen from their natural habitat
to be sold as pets on the black market. Now our partner
organization there has continued its work with animals
and has also expanded into rainforest education and research.
Volunteers at the Wildlife Rescue Center have not only
cared for and helped rehabilitate hundreds of animals,
but they have also had the unique opportunity to help
release them back into the rainforest. As a volunteer
on this project, you will be working closely with stolen,
orphaned and/or abused animals, including various types
of wild birds, monkeys, reptiles, and jaguars. You will
also be able to help educate groups of children and tourists
on the wonders of the Petén Rainforest.
Our partner organization's objectives are to strive for
the conservation, preservation, protection and understanding
of the indigenous wildlife in the Petén. These
goals are achieved with the dedicated help of their staff
and volunteers. Orientation:
Upon arrival into Flores, Guatemala, a Volunteer Adventures
staff will pick you up and transport you to the Wildlife Center.
When you get there, you will be given
a complete tour and orientation of the facilities. You
will then be familiarized with your daily schedule.
Transportation:
Volunteers are responsible for booking the 45-minute flight from Guatemala City to Flores. Volunteer Adventures will arrange airport pick-up in Flores, and transportation to the project site. At the end of your program, we will also arrange for transportation from the project site to the airport in Flores.
Accommodations:
You will be staying with other volunteers in on-site
housing. The two-story building includes comfortable
bunk beds, mosquito netting and bathrooms with showers,
flush toilets, and solar electricity.
Nearby is the kitchen and a large dining area.
This area also serves as the main socialization center,
meeting room, and a place to practice your Spanish.
Meals:
You will receive three meals per day, prepared
on-site by a local cook.
Excursions:
The town of Flores is just a 10 minute boat ride away
from the project, and it is the launching point for excursions
to the Mayan ruins of Tikal. The staff will be happy to
help you plan a trip to these majestic ruins and to help
you plan other outdoor activities, such as trekking to remote ruins, caving, swimming in the lake, canopy rides, mountain biking and fishing.
Your volunteer experience also includes an overnight visit
to the Mayan ruins of Tikal. We pay and arrange for your
shuttle, hotel, entrance fees and guided tour -- everything
but your food while you are there.
In-country
support:
You will be working side-by-side with staff members
who live on-site at this project. The staff is happy to
help you during your time at the Wildlife Rescue Center. |
