Located on the southeastern coast of Africa, Mozambique has the longest Indian Ocean coastline on the continent. The country’s centerpiece, Lake Malawi, stretches 360 miles along rolling mountains and palm-trimmed shores. The people of Mozambique are as diverse as the landscape, speaking multiple indigenous languages and belonging to numerous ethnic groups. Today, Mozambique’s culture is a blend of both indigenous and Portuguese traditions, a combination depicted in its unique music and architecture.

Why Volunteer in Mozambique?

Mozambique boasts natural beauty and cultural diversity, but it is also a land scarred by decades of war, drought, and severe flooding. Since winning its independence from Portugal in 1975, the country has faced unfriendly neighbors and a devastating civil war. The 15-year-long conflict claimed the lives of more than 1 million people and forced more than 3 million to flee the country. The war disrupted rail lines, wiped out crops, and resulted in widespread hunger and destruction. Today, frequent floods and occasional cyclones force villagers from their homes, creating obstacles for reconstruction. Our project in Mozambique aims to strengthen the community physically and emotionally while building bonds and establishing relationships.

Project Location: Vilanculos
The coastal town of Vilanculos is a short boat ride from Bazaruto Archipelago—one of Mozambique’s most famous national parks. With its favorable climate, crystal blue waters, unspoiled beaches and abundance of water sports, Vilanculos has seen extensive growth in the last decade. But in February of 2007, a strength-four cyclone tore through the village, carrying winds in excess of 120 mph. Though homes and buildings have been reconstructed, your volunteer efforts will help rebuild the spirit and vitality of the local community.
