Guatemala is a paradise for all who visit, from nature-lovers to archeology buffs. The rugged terrain and lush forests of the Central American country have inspired visitors from around the world. Known as the land of eternal spring, Guatemala offers ideal temperatures year-round. Its fantastic geography is accented with the unique traditions of the ancient Mayan civilization, which has strongly influenced the culture of the country to the present day.
Why volunteer in Guatemala? The largest country in Central America, Guatemala boasts exceptional biodiversity with a total of eight distinct ecosystems. A highlight is the Petén region in the north, home to the last stretch of virgin rainforest in Central America. Unfortunately, the land is not all federally protected and is under constant threat of destruction from pollution, logging, farming, and general environmental disregard.
Also in need of assistance are Guatemala's people. In fact, nearly 75% of the population lives below the poverty line. Hit especially hard are the country's children, many of whom receive little education and have few realistic hopes of bettering their situation.
Our partner organizations in Guatemala recognize the need to protect the country's assets, both natural and human. They have dedicated themselves to improving social and ecological conditions for future generations.
Project Location: Hawaii
Named for its similarity to the Pacific islands, Hawaii is located on the south Pacific coast of Guatemala. This small surf town is home to beautiful mangrove forests, dense wetlands, lagoons, and volcanic sand beaches. Although much of the area has been deforested for agricultural purposes, the seaside community takes pride in its beachfront property and has dedicated a portion of it to the Sea Turtle Rescue Project.

Project Location: The Petén
The Petén region was once heavily populated by the indigenous Mayan people. Now, archeological remains, especially the impressive ruins at Tikal, are one of the area's main attractions. Although the forest is home to hundreds of species of mammals, birds, and plants, it is under constant threat of destruction for commercialization. The Petén is in dire need of protection for both ecological and historical reasons. |
