Brazil
is the largest country in South America, the fifth-biggest
nation in the world, and home to the second-most populous
city on the planet. This geographic giant has all the
diversity one would expect from a country of its size.
Thanks to dazzling beaches, lavish rainforests, and natural
wonders to spare, Brazil exceeds all expectations.
For all the attraction of Brazil's natural beauty, it
is probably the Brazilians themselves that are the most
captivating. Their unique culture has been shaped not
only by the Portuguese, who supplied the nation's principal
religion and language, but also by the African, native
Indian, Arabic, and Asian influences that flavor the country.
The result is an enchanting mixture of people, foods,
and traditions to be found nowhere else on Earth.
Why
volunteer in Brazil?
Despite its many charms, managing both its environment
and its people has been a struggle for Brazil. The federal
government has long ignored the multitudes of impoverished
citizens living in shacks around the nation's cities.
These shantytowns, called favelas, are home to thousands
of people who live without water, electricity or plumbing.
Often unable to attend city schools and largely unaided
by the government, favela residents often find themselves
in a negative cycle that is difficult to escape without
outside help.
Another tragedy facing Brazil is the lack of protection
for its incomparable rainforest. Careless deforestation
has devastated indigenous plants and animals, as well
as causing immeasurable harm to the ecosystem. As valuable
resources to Brazil and the rest of the world, these ecological
treasures need international advocates to help protect
them for the generations to come.
Our partner organizations in Brazil have taken it upon
themselves to remedy these glaring social and environmental
problems. With a program at a Rio community center, our
local partner promotes literacy and education among the
youth of the favelas. In the rainforest just outside of
Rio, our partner in Tijuca National Park focuses on nature
conservation and wildlife education, hoping to limit the
destruction of precious natural resources. Project
Location: Rio de Janeiro Few
would disagree that Rio de Janeiro is among the world's
most beautiful cities. Known as the "Cidade Maravilhosa,"
Rio lies between Guanabara Bay, a tropically forested
mountain range, and the beautiful beaches of Copacabana
and Ipanema. The outstretched arms of Rio's Christ Redeemer
Statue, set atop Corcovado Mountain's 2,307-foot peak,
can be seen from virtually any place in the city.
Rio de Janeiro is famous for its festive atmosphere, most
notably during Carnaval when dancing, parades, and samba
music fills the streets. And despite the city's vast contrast
between rich and poor, "Cariocas" (Rio residents)
are known for their passion for life and relaxed lifestyle.
This fascinating city is the base for our partner organizations
in Brazil. |
