This
country is largely an untouched outdoor wonderland. With
most of the human population living on the eastern border,
the bulk of the wilderness in Botswana has been preserved
for wildlife. The waterways and grasslands of the national
parks have been mostly untainted by tourism, and are still
a haven for lions, hippos, giraffes, zebras, waterfowl,
elephants, and cheetahs. Blessed with the extremes of
lush delta lands to the north and dry desert terrain on
the Namibian border, Botswana is a country where visitors
can find tremendous natural beauty in all forms.
Why volunteer in Botswana?
Although Botswana is extremely fortunate in terms of natural
wealth, its environment has not survived unharmed. Farmers
have allowed their livestock to overgraze the natural
plains, making it hard for wild animals to live there.
In many parts of the country, the climate is dry and harsh,
and there is not enough water for the wildlife to survive.
In addition, illegal hunting is a constant threat to the
animals that live on the safari.
Our local partner organization has chosen to use its private
game reserve to promote environmental and anti-poaching
awareness in Botswana. Through the hard work of rangers
and volunteers, the reserve has been carefully preserved
in order to carry out research and educate people about
the wildlife and ecosystems of the African safari.
Project Location: Tuli Block
The Tuli Block is a strip of land in southeastern Botswana
near the South African border. This region is best known
for its large numbers of wild elephants, but it is also
home to zebras, leopards, and the rare eland antelope.
Most of the Tuli Block is dedicated to public and private
game reserves, such as the one owned by our partner organization.
The unique geography of this area is another attraction,
with a landscape featuring large red rock formations and
acacia woodlands surrounded by valleys and grassy plains.
