Soaring over two miles above sea level in the Andes Mountains, Bolivia is known for its great heights. It is home to the highest capital city, La Paz, as well as Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. The mountains provide a beautiful background for the biodiversity below, which includes thousands of miles of flourishing rainforests, spectacular waterfalls, shimmering lakes, and intriguing wildlife. Bolivia is also one of the most indigenous countries in South America--over half of the population is Native and about thirty percent is of mixed Native and European ancestry. With one of the smallest populations in South America and very little tourism, the unique country of Bolivia is a well-kept secret.

Why volunteer in Bolivia?
Bolivia's low tourism rate is a blessing for the preservation of indigenous treasures, but the lack of income from visitors has also made it one of the poorest countries in South America. Bolivia is the least developed nation on the continent and is still struggling with modernization. Education standards for the country's young people are far below average, setting the country even further behind for the future. The nation's poverty has also increased its dependence on logging, causing irreparable damage to the ecosystem. Recognizing the severity of these problems, ,our partner organizations in Bolivia have created programs to preserve the country's indigenous culture and wildlife, also working to improve their country for future generation.

Project Location: Santa Cruz de la Sierra
Located on the eastern plains of Bolivia, Santa Cruz is the second largest city in the country. It is mainly agricultural due to its vast wealth of natural resources, including huge tracts of rainforest. The city's history goes all the way back to pre-Incan times, and visitors can find both ancient ruins and colonial architecture around the city. Santa Cruz is the base for our volunteer projects in Bolivia.
