With its unspoiled beaches, tropical rainforest, rugged
mountain ranges and vast tracts of desert, Australia
is a land of beauty and contrast. Visitors are often
surprised by Australia’s diversity, from the urban
metropolis of Sydney and its world famous opera house,
to the windswept outback, with its dirt red and dusty
under the vibrant sun.
Within this unique landscape, Australia hosts many rare
ecological wonders such as kangaroos, koalas and other
marsupials, as well as four species of flying fox bats,
the largest flying mammal in the world. Besides the
numerous animals found on land and along the coasts,
Australia features has more than 10,000 beaches and
over 16 World Heritage sites to explore.
Home to almost 20 million people, Australia’s
population reflects the varied landscape. Whether in
the outback or the city, Australians are generally laid-back,
friendly, and full of good humor. The nation's unique
blend of Brits, Irish, New Zealanders, Europeans and
Asians creates a unique and wonderful melting pot of
histories, food and culture.
Why Volunteer in Australia?
Like in many Western countries, expansive development
continually threatens Australia’s environment.
Though Australia has one of the lowest population
densities in the world, its long isolation, fragile
soils and difficult climate have made it particularly
vulnerable to human-induced change. Australians are
now forced to create solutions for introduced pest species,
destroyed forests, overstocked rangelands, and rapidly
disappearing wildlife.
These solutions can only come about through a combination
of ecological restoration and public education. Our
projects in Australia give volunteers an opportunity
to work hands-on with local species such as flying fox
bats and kangaroos, restore local habitats, and support
educational programs. Through their efforts, our volunteers
provide much needed help to organizations working to
save endangered species while they educate themselves
and others about ways humans can live in better balance
with the land.
Project
Location: Atherton Tablelands
Just over an hour inland from the coastal town of Cairns northeastern Australia,
the lush Atherton Tablelands are considered by locals
to be Queensland's best highland getaway. Home
to World Heritage-listed rainforests, national parks,
mountains, rivers, lakes and waterfalls, Australia has
no shortage of inspiring landscapes to explore. The local area has much to offer the nature-oriented person. Visitors can spend a day bush
walking and bird watching, cooling off on a waterfall
tour, or enjoying the scenery from above in a hot air
balloon. With its cool, fresh air, verdant countryside
and relaxed atmosphere, the Tablelands represent Australian
countryside at its very best.
